You Could Be Feeding Your Pets Carcinogens If You’re Using This Pet Food

In this article you will find all you need to know about the best and the worst pet foods on the market. Some of the worst brands are using roadkill, carcinogens and moldy grains in the production process – this is inhumane and utterly disgusting.

We are all fairly conscious about the ingredients that are going into our food these days, we read the back of product labels to find out calorie and additive levels, and generally make an effort to know exactly what we are eating. But what about the food we purchase for the other members in our family, and by that I mean our pets.

The Low Down…

According to a recent study carried out by The Cornucopia Institute, the quality of the pet food on the market today, particularly the cat and dog food, is falling well below standard and has raised serious cause for concern among professionals and customers. They say that instead of providing nutritious, wholesome meals for our furry friends, the industry is rather treating it like a waste disposal system for the waste products of the human food industry. Some of the rendered meat byproducts used in 30 of the pet food samples actually contained traces of a drug used to Euthanize animals. This may come as a shock, but this goes hand in hand with the regulations that actually state that meat from animals that “died otherwise than by slaughter” can be used in pet foods. The regulations allow for pets that have had to be put down to be used as meat for pet food, which explains why some of the samples contained traces of these Euthanizing drugs!

The pet food regulations also state that roadkill and animals that have died of disease can be used for pet food – shocking! Further to this, The Cornucopia Institute stated that this could be causing serious degenerative neurological diseases in the pets that consume these products.

Artificial food dyes and colourants are also added to a lot of dry pet foods and these chemicals are know to cause things like hyperactivity, cancer, diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases.

The worst offenders identified during the tests were:

  • Whiskas trays and pouches
  • Royal Canin – Feline Health Nutrition
  • Friskies Pate
  • Purina Pro Plan
  • 9 Lives – Tender Morsels
  • Hill’s Science Diet
  • Iams Proactive Health – Pate and Fillets

If you happen to be using any of these products then we seriously advise you to stop immediately. There are many healthy and mostly organic alternatives that are priced equally and leave you secure in the knowledge that you are feeding your loved ones the right stuff, some of these great products are:

  • Pet Guard – All Formulas
  • Orijen
  • Great Life: Essentials
  • Taste of the wild – Canyon River and Rocky Mountain
  • Evanger’s – All Organics
  • Purina – Beyond and Muse
  • Organix Castor and Pollux – Grain Free Pate, Natural Ultramix and Adult Cat
  • Hound and Gatos – All Formulas
  • Nature’s Logic
  • Wellness – TruFood, Vigor and Spots Stew

There are many other healthy alternatives to feeding your animals nasty second rate products and carcinogens, amongst other harmful additives in their food. Just ask at your local pet store or veterinary for further advice on organic pet food.
